The following sites can be checked to see the companies that have created mining pools and to verify that the company is doing what it says it is, (if your mine is not listed here, RUN!!)

On the above maps and sites, you see hundreds of bitcoin transactions taking place, these all have to be verified by miners. The commissions from these transactions also get paid to the miner/s who solve the block veifying these transactions.
